Creating Libraries, Supporting Literacy

As of early 2017, Books Matter has donated over 22,000 books to Ghana, establishing libraries in 20 schools in six regions of the country -- the Volta Region, the Eastern Region, the Greater Accra Region, the Brong Ahafo Region, the Northern Region and the Ashanti Region. Besides schools and libraries, we've also donated to an orphanage, a juvenile detention centre, and girls' Lit Clubs. Based on feedback we receive, we know that the books we send have a significant impact on the students' academic growth and their literacy skills.

There are still a lot of schools in need of books. We often hear from teachers and community members asking us for assistance. With your help, we can help them.

Test Scores Increase

At Goviefe Agordome Basic School, the staff have seen a big improvement since receiving books in 2014. For the first time ever, the school acheived a 100% success rate on the national BECE (Basic Education Certificate Exam), with every Form 3 (Grade 9) student passing!

Students at Hodzo Aviepe School in Ho receive books at a formal presentation, presented by the chief, on behalf of Books Matter. The school's first library now fully functional. Since that first donation of 1,000 books in 2013, we sent a second shipment, including some books donated by Paulo Coelho, in 2015.

Students from Aborlove Nolopi School dance the Agbadza as they lead the van carrying our book donation to their school grounds.
